SPORTS CAR CENTRE PRESENTS

Motoring news from around the world  -  February 2019

Original Venice Crew Mustangs

The Original Venice Crew (OVC) is offering production versions of their popular 1965 Shelby GT350 “OVC Competition Model” sports car. Only 36 of these OVC  C/Ms will be built, each incorporating several aerodynamic, aero, enhancements designed by Shelby American designer Peter Brock.

Each OVC C/M is built at the Shelby facility in SoCal, just as Carroll and the OVC team did in 1965. The shop is part of Carroll Shelby International headquarters, called “Shelby LA.” Modeled after the 1960s offices at the original Venice facility, the shop features a “desk” for Carroll and one of his famous Stetsons. To order your OVC C/M, call Jim Marietta at (714) 305-8578!

Rebirth In Dingolfing: The BMW 1600 GT Convertible

Apprentices at the BMW plant in Lower Bavaria handed over the recently restored special to the vehicle collection at BMW Group Classic.

The vehicle collection of BMW Group Classic is now richer by another unique special. This is all thanks to the vocational training team at the BMW plant in Dingolfing. The apprentices restored the BMW 1600 GT convertible in a project lasting several years under the guidance of their trainers. The four-seater painted in silver has a red hood and its unusual history makes it a revealing representative of the time when the company BMW made the transition from being a niche automaker to a mass-production car manufacturer enjoying steady growth in success and an international reputation.

The classic car now radiates a new lustre. It is the only surviving example of originally two prototypes that BMW commissioned from the Italian bodywork designer Pietro Frua. In autumn of 1967, both automobiles left the production buildings in Dingolfing for the first time. The test drives for one of the vehicles came to an end with an accident and the vehicle was then scrapped. The second car was granted a special honour. The BMW 1600 GT convertible was handed over to the major shareholder in BMW AG at the time, Herbert Quandt. It remained in the hands of the family for many years and was then passed on to other private owners. A fashion model from Munich enjoyed the wind coursing through her hair as she drove along in the open-top BMW and the rare treasure was then acquired by a businessman from Fürth in Franconia, and subsequently found a new home at the Munich-based Allianz Centre for Engineering.

Major restoration work was carried out there on the BMW 1600 GT for the first time so as to ensure that the car was preserved for posterity. When the experts from BWM Group Classic became aware of the unique special from Dingolfing and they succeeded in agreeing an acquisition, a plan emerged to return the automobile to its original condition at the very place where it first saw the light of day. The restoration at the Dingolfing plant became a project that formed part of the training of apprentices who were aspiring to become bodywork and vehicle construction mechanics.

BMW Group Classic supported the project in a number of ways including the expanded options for procuring original parts that had recently become available. Furthermore, replicas of numerous components that were no longer obtainable were painstakingly remanufactured.

The rebirth of the BMW 1600 GT convertible in Dingolfing also rekindled memories of a particularly exciting chapter in the history of BMW. When the two-door car came into existence, the company had just taken over the Dingolfing vehicle manufacturer Glas in that same year. Since 1955, the company had successfully produced the Goggomobile. In 1964, Glas launched the sporty, elegant Glas 1300 GT styled by Frua in the marketplace and one year later the more powerful Glas 1700 GT. Glas was looking for a strong partner and the automaker initially agreed a joint-distribution operation with BMW but this ultimately led to a complete takeover by the Munich company. The compact sports car was then fitted with the rear axle, the seats and the 77 kW/105 hp engine from the BMW 1600 TI, a BMW kidney grille for the front end of the automobile and the round headlights from the BMW 02 Series.

The idea of placing the sporty coupé alongside a convertible came from the USA. A proposal was made by the importer Max Hoffmann to develop a new version of the coupé with a 2.0 litre engine and an open-top version. In October 1967, Frua delivered a convertible body mounted on a strengthened floor assembly. This was then painted in Dingolfing where all further assembly work took place. On 16 November, the BMW 1600 GT convertible was entered in the plant’s production book as being completed. However, the plans for series production and export to the USA never came to fruition.

The Comeback Of The Land Rover Defender

The Series Land Rover vehicles haven’t changed much since the idea for the first model was dreamed up by the Wilks brothers more than 70 years ago.

With each successive design — from the Series 1, 2 and 3 Land Rover vehicles, to the later “Defender” vehicles — changes were largely evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. However, the next generation of Defender preserves the historic foundation of rugged durability, versatility and capability with a revolutionary design and the latest technologies. The all-new Defender will be revealed in 2019 and on sale in 2020.

100 Years Of Zagato: The Best Of Each Decade

A century ago, aeronautics expert Ugo Zagato applied the light-but-strong aluminum-frame construction methods used to build airplanes to the heavy, bulky cars of the day. And with that fateful decision, a star was born.

The list of Zagato masterpieces built in the 100 years since the Italian coachbuilder opened for business in 1919 is both long and admirable. But Zagato claimed he never designed a car based on style alone. “Great designs don’t come from wanting to produce a good shape,” he once said. “They come from making cars faster and more intelligent.”

In celebration of Zagato’s centennial anniversary, here are our selections for the most iconic Zagato designs from each decade.

1920s: Alfa Romeo 6C 1500

With a potent 1500-cc six-cylinder engine that produced 46 hp, the 6C already had the heart of a race car. And although Alfa Romeo manufactured its own bodies, many chassis were farmed out to coachbuilders like Zagato—a frequent choice of owners interested in a little competition. Alfa and Zagato have maintained a partnership, and it’s easy to see why. Zagato’s style and craftsmanship were first-rate from the start.

1930s: Lancia Aprilia Sport

Zagato – 1938 Lancia Aprilia Sport

Commissioned by Lancia dealer Enrico Minetti, the Aprilia Sport personified Ugo Zagato’s belief in aerodynamic design. The 1938 original was destroyed during World War II, but to celebrate Lancia’s Centennial, Ugo’s grandson Andrea decided to recreate his own Zagato-bodied Aprilia Sport.

Working from two faded monochrome photographs, the results were astonishing. In fact, a description of the car on conceptcarz.com could have been written in the 1930s: “The sheet metal of the bodywork was skillfully handcrafted by master panel beaters, working on a solid, machined buck. The final result is a symphony of perfectly taut lines and seamless highlights.”

1940s: Ferrari 166 MM Panoramica

Zagato – 1949 Ferrari 166 MM Panoramica

Ferrari’s Zagato connection began when Enzo Ferrari drove for Alfa Romeo and later served as head of Alfa’s race team. When Ferrari left Alfa to build his own cars, several buyers requested Zagato bodies, including racer Antonio Stagnoli. His 1948 Ferrari 166 MM Zagato Panoramica (chassis #0018M) was the first Ferrari-Zagato collaboration.

Built on a 166 MM chassis (an upgraded version of the 1948 Mille Miglia winning 166 S), the Zagato Panoramica featured an odd-looking shape and Plexiglas side windows that curved with the roof to maintain the car’s rounded, aerodynamic styling. Stagnoli asked Zagato to transform the car into a spider in 1950, and after some racing success #0018M was lost, including its original body. Ferrari recreated the coupe in 2007 to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

1950s: Maserati A6G/54

Zagato scored again by creating alloy berlinetta coachwork for 20 Maserati A6G/54 models, creating lighter and more dynamic race cars that proved successful on the track. So successful, in fact, that the Zagatos propelled Maserati to the 1956 Italian Sports Car Championship.

One sold for $4.5M at RM Sotheby’s 2018 Monterey sale, another went for $4.4M at Gooding & Company’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este Auction in 2014.

Because details and trim continually evolved, none of the 20 Zagatos were identical, and one even had a double-bubble roof more common to Zagato-bodied Fiat Abarths. That Maserati failed to sell at Gooding’s 2018 Pebble Beach Auction.

1960s: Aston Martin DB4 GT

The Aston Martin DB4 GT was a shorter and lighter version of the DB4 road car, aimed at the newly popular GT class. It wasn’t as competitive as Aston had hoped, so off it went to Zagato, which produced an exceptionally good looking car. Unfortunately, it still wasn’t competitive enough against the stiff competition that came from the Jaguar E-type and Ferrari 250 GTO.

Although the DB4 GT Zagato didn’t become the race winner that Aston and Zagato had hoped it would be, the car marked the beginning of a long-standing and successful collaboration that continues to this day.

DB4 GT Zagatos routinely sell for more than $10M, with a record-setting $14.3M paid for this stunning 1962 model at RM Sotheby’s Driven by Disruption sale in 2015.

1970s: Lancia Fulvia / Alfa Romeo Junior Z production cars

1971 Lancia Fulvia side 3/4 yellow – 1973 Alfa Romeo 1600 Junior Zagato Coupe

In the mid-1960s and into the ’70s, Zagato experimented with producing cars in volume.

The Lancia Flavia Sport Zagato, launched in 1963, saw production of about 625 cars before the Lancia Fulvia Sport Zagato launched two years later. First built with an aluminum body but changed to steel in 1970, Fulvia production jumped to more than 7000.

The Alfa Romeo Junior Z, based on the shorter-wheelbase 105-series Alfa Romeo Spider, was available in 1300-cc guise for from 1969–71 and 1600-cc from 1972–75. Production numbers are up for debate, but we’ll say this: good luck finding one. In fact, it has been nearly four years since the last 1600-cc was offered at auction; a 1973 model sold for $74,800 at Bonhams’ Quail Lodge Auction in 2015. According to Bonhams, it is one of only 12 known to exist in the U.S.

Fun fact: The Junior Z’s Zagato design was the inspiration for the Honda CRX.

1980s: Aston Martin V8 / Nissan Autech Stelvio

1987 Aston Martin V8 Vantage 3/4 – 1991 Nissan Autech Zagato Stelvio

Reprising their Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato collaboration of the 1960s, the Aston Martin V8 Zagato was launched at Geneva in 1986. Once again combining lighter weight, more horsepower, and original design, the angular Zagato was a hit. Exclusivity also returned, as 52 coupes and 37 convertibles were built from 1986–90.

In something of a 1A selection, the Nissan Autech Stelvio pushed the aesthetics boundary more than most Zagato designs. Featuring wing mirrors housed in an aerodynamic blister on the wing/fender, the cars were built in a joint venture with Nissan subsidiary Autech and launched in 1989. If you’ve never seen one, you have to check it out.

1990s: Alfa Romeo SZ / Lancia Hyena

1990 Alfa Romeo SZ red 3/4 front low – 1995 Lancia Hyena rear 3/4

The Alfa Romeo SZ and the later RZ convertible are based on the sophisticated Alfa Romeo 75 platform, which was known as the Milano in the United States. Following the usual Zagato formula of less weight and more power, the lightweight two-seater incorporated the Milano’s 3.0 V-6 transaxle platform, and the result was an exciting performance vehicle. While Zagato built the cars, the design is credited to Robert Opron and Antonio Castellana of Fiat Centro Stile.

The Lancia Hyena, another home-market collaboration for Zagato, also deserves mention. Based on one of the hottest five-door hatches of all time, the all-conquering Lancia Delta Integrale Evo, Zagato came up with a lightweight two-door version of the all-wheel-drive four-cylinder turbocharged car. Sadly, Lancia and parent Fiat never gave Zagato the opportunity to buy unfinished cars from the factory, so only a handful were built using finished (and often crashed) Lancia Delta Integrales.

2000s: Aston Martin DB7 / Bentley Continental GTZ

2003 Aston Martin DB7 Zagato 3/4 high – 2006 Bentley Continental GTZ side profile

By the 2000s, Aston Martin’s successful reach into more affordable production cars (with the DB7, launched in 1994) was getting a bit dated. But after Andrea Zagato and Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez had a chance meeting at Pebble Beach in 2001, the two hatched a plan to produce 99 DB7 Zagatos. Launched in 2003, the car more closely resembles the DB4 GT Zagato of 1961. While the DB7 Zagato coupe wasn’t available in the United States, the DB AR1 roadster was produced only for the U.S.

Zagato continued to produce very limited series cars in the 2000s, with models like the Bentley Continental GT and the Ferrari 550/575/599. Only nine Bentley Continental GTZ examples were produced, and once again they were the result of a chance meeting at Pebble Beach—this time in 2006—between Andrea Zagato and Bentley boss Franz-Josef Paefgen. They’re breathtaking.

2010s: BMW Zagato Coupe / Porsche 356 Carrera Speedster Sanction

2012 BMW Zagato Coupe 3/4 front runway mountains – Porsche 356 Carrera Speedster Sanction

While Zagato and Aston Martin have continued to team up on limited production models, in 2012 BMW approached Zagato to build a concept Z4. A coupe version was first shown at the Villa d’Este Concorso in May 2012, with a roadster unveiled at Monterey in August 2012. Some of those design cues appear on the 2019 production model.

Zagato also worked on a Porsche 356 Carrera Speedster model. Based on a one-off that was destroyed in 1959, nine examples have been built.

Found in a sculptor’s barn, these 3 Bugattis could fetch $1M

Dutch sculptor August Thomassen not only created beautiful art, he appreciated it in automobiles. Four of Thomassen’s cars—including three classic Bugattis worth $1 million—will be offered at Artcural’s Rétromobile sale on February 8 in Paris.

The cars have been hidden in the sculptor’s studio barn in Belgium for nearly six decades. His family was so concerned the cars might be stolen that they barricaded the barn’s two entrances with some 200 sandbags and a modern car. But when someone broke into the building last year, and with the 95-year-old Thomassen unable to drive, his family decided to sell the treasure trove.

Thomassen is a lifelong Bugatti fan, and his sculpted bust of company founder Ettore Bugatti resides at the National Automobile Museum in Mulhouse, France. In the late 1950s and early ’60s, Thomassen purchased a 1929 Bugatti Type 40, a 1932 Bugatti Type 49 limousine, and an all-original 1937 Bugatti Type 57 Cabriolet. The fourth Thomassen automobile being auctioned is a 1925 Citroën Cabriolet.

Thomassen’s love for cars began early, as he tagged along with his father, a physician, whenever he delivered medication to patients in their community. Thomassen’s oldest sister was the first woman in their town (Maastricht, Netherlands) to receive a driver’s license. The Thomassen family also traveled often, particularly to France, where Thomassen has resided for years.

Thomassen’s daughter told the De Telegraaf newspaper that her father admired Bugatti automobiles for their engineering and unusual styling. Requesting that she not be identified, Thomassen’s daughter told the De Telegraaf that the cars may have been hidden, but they weren’t a secret.

“We regularly had enthusiasts at the door who wanted to buy the cars,” she says. “But my father refused to sell them. Even though we hardly had money as a family. You can safely say that we were poor.”

They won’t be any longer. The presale estimate for the Bugattis is €650,000–€930,000 ($746,596–$1,062,483). All are offered at no reserve.

The 1932 Type 49 and 1937 Type 57 both feature custom coachwork. The Type 49 by Vanvooren appeared the 1932 Paris Auto Show and is valued at $170.000–$228.000 The stunning all-original Type 57, one of Swiss coachbuilder Herman Graber’s most beautiful creations, could fetch as much as $700.000.

Unlike the other two Bugattis, Thomassen frequently drove the 1929 Type 40 and crashed it in a rally in 1984. He was in the midst of repairing it and was creating his own bodywork, but he never finished the job. The car is being offered without body panels, only an exposed wood frame. Pre-sale estimate is $114.000–$149.000.

Thomassen’s charming little 1925 Citroën Cabriolet is in need of mechanical work. The boattail-designed roadster is valued at $11.000–$17.000.

It seems appropriate that Thomassen’s cars are being auctioned in Paris. While his appreciation for beautiful automobiles led him to Bugatti, the automaker’s founder wasn’t the only artist in the Bugatti family. Like Thomassen, Ettore’s brother was a sculptor. Sadly, he suffered from depression and took his own life at the age of 31—in Paris, no less. Bugatti’s first name? Rembrandt.

Haynes Manual creator John Haynes dies at 80

John Harold Haynes with manual

Entrepreneur John Haynes, who founded the Haynes Publishing Group and created the iconic Haynes Manual guidebooks for repairing vehicles of every description, died February 8 due to illness. He was 80.

A lifelong auto aficionado, Haynes used his love of cars and publishing to create a vast library of repair manuals that countless mechanics have relied upon to keep their cars running. The manuals are so ubiquitous that their frequent instruction “installation is reverse of removal” is a common joke. You’d be hard pressed to find a mechanic who hasn’t had at least one dog-eared, grease-stained Haynes manual in the garage.

Haynes, born March 25, 1938 in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), developed a passion for cars early on. As a child he loved to join his father, who managed a tea plantation, for rides in the family’s Morris 8 saloon. The family moved to the UK when John was 12, and while attending boarding school with his brother, David, John convinced his house master to allow him to skip rugby so he could spend his time converting an Austin 7 into a lighter, sportier Austin 7 Special. Haynes eventually sold the car at a sizeable profit and used the money to produce a booklet showing other enthusiasts how to make the same Austin conversion. He printed 250 copies of Building A ‘750’ Special and sold them all within 10 days.

After graduating from boarding school, Haynes joined the Royal Air Force and worked in logistics, an experience that taught him valuable business management skills and enabled him to pursue his passions for motor racing and publishing. He developed and raced several cars, including the Elva Courier displayed in the Haynes International Motor Museum in Sparkford, Somerset.

In 1965, Haynes helped an air force colleague rebuild an Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite and quickly realized that the factory manual was not at all intended to help the average car owner. So he bought a camera and documented the process of dismantling and rebuilding the engine, creating the first Haynes manual to provide step-by-step descriptions, photo sequences and diagrams to simplify the process. Haynes published his first manual in 1966; the initial run of 3000 sold out in less than three months. The company has since sold more than 200 million manuals covering everything from that little Sprite to the Red Bull RB 7 and even the Millenium Falcon.

Haynes’ publishing success financed a vast collection of cars, which allowed him to open the Haynes International Motor Museum in 1985. “The appreciation people felt for (John’s) contribution was most visible on an almost daily basis at the Museum’s Café 750,” the Haynes’ website says. “While enjoying lunch John was regularly approached by visitors, who would invariably be greeted with his infectious warmth and engaging, enthusiastic boyish smile. He was always happy to oblige fellow enthusiasts with photographs, engage in conversation, and share his passion for cars.”
